House cleaning and upgrades  - Posted by Meson - 5/7/2008 7:05:58 PM

Over the weekend, I took down the website for maintenance and upgrades. This downtime let me add more memory and rewire my home office. It also let me clean up my work area.

During the upgrade, I took both Tsukasa the server, my workstation, and my notebook computer to two (2) gigabytes each. This will let us handle all of your requests, as well as run all of the business software we need to run. This should be the last time we need an memory upgrade for the foreseeable future.

While I was playing with the RAM, I also switched out the back up hard drive. This drive held our archive files well as the back up files for out database server. It was getting full, so I decided a swap was needed. My plans include adding one more hard drive to the server. This one will be to hold the music files. We got too many now for me to re-encode all of them from scratch. So, a separate drive to hold them will be useful if something happens to our current system drive. I'm pondering if I should get an external or internal drive for this. What do you think? I will leave the comments on this blog open for suggestions.

In the meantime, I use the downtime to clean up the place. It was time to organize the home office (which is in reality my living room). The clean up went well. I replaced several small power extensions with one big one. That decreased the amount of wires running around my house a lot.

While cleaning, I moved everything around. I now have one kick ass entertainment / business room. I still need to replace my work chair, and buy additional speakers, but I have pictures of this place soon. That way you can all awe at my 1337ness. :D

May 2008 Upgrades  - Posted by Meson - 5/3/2008 12:36:20 AM

I will be taking the website and webcast down at 4 am EDT (1 am PDT, 8 am GMT) so I can upgrade the server's memory, and to replace the now full back up drive. This down time should last 4-6 hours.

The Trouble with Marketing, Part 1  - Posted by Meson - 4/12/2008 8:35:53 PM

Marketing Toon Radio has been a problem since day one. Without teh fundign to do a full scaled campaign, I had to do things a lot more subtly. This would be ok in any other industry, but it is a headache when dealing with animation, expecially anime. The anime crisis that is affecting the anime community does have an impact on my life and how I run Toon Radio. I could try to stear the webcast away from anime and go to a safer animation market. However, almsot all the animation soundtracks available are from anime. This is a dilema. How do I run an anime business when the market to support it doesn't exist? The answer is patience.

Bringign Toon Radio into the black will take time, but I think it is doable, It will require some changes to how I live my life, but I think that will be a good thing.

The first thing I need to do is expand my music library. I started my anime fandom late. As a result, my anime music collection did not exist when I started down this path. I have since gained thousands of soundtracks, but I still do not have teh collections other animation webcasts have. This has to change before Toon Radio can be successful. If not, listeners will simply go to the other 'casts. fortuantely, I have already started this. Unfortunately, buying music takes money, especially imports. I can only buy a dozen or so soundtracks a month, and that's if I have the funding for them, I will get all of your favorate tracks eventually, but it may take years before I catch up with my competetors.

Which leads me to my next point. I need money for the music. There will be a time when I can buy all the music I need using the revenue I get from Toon Radio. Unfirtunately, that time is not today. Revenue comes from advertising and UpSnap subscriptions, but both of those require massive ammounts of listeners. In the meantime, I need to search other streams of funding.

A job would help, and I am currently trying to get one. I should have something soon, but I need to get one within this month. If teh job pays relatively well I can do this. I need about $1000 a month to live. $700 of that is all Toon Radio, and that does not count advertising and music. The only other way to get this money is donations, ad I doublt you guys would help me with it.

That means I have to use the job until I get enough listeners to attract advertisers.

I will show you how I will do that in my next rant.
